Pop songs are
often built on fairly simple
chord progressions. This helps
make a song more accessible and
easier to remember. But
sometimes you might feel that
you're stuck in a rut, repeating
I - IV - V over and over. Here
are three simple substitutions
that, if your melody allows, can
make these same chords more
interesting without straying out
of common pop harmony. Set up
some extra tracks on your
sequencer and try each out
against your melody |

Concepts
and modern technologies in a
wide variety of music production
areas including: MIDI
sequencing, desktop music
production, sampling, sound
design and audio production
using Reason, Ableton Live,
Logic, Sonar, and Digidesign's
Pro Tools.

Discrete Surround; two primary
ways to deliver surround signal. The
older analog matrix technology works by
mixing (matrixing) multiple channels
into two main channels; the matrixed
information then has to be decoded into
the original channel configuration. The
newer digital discrete technology keeps
all the channels separate from start to
finish. Discrete surround sound is
superior to matrix surround. Surround
effects are clearer and more distinctly
positioned.
Backplane: A circuit board
containing sockets into which other
circuit boards can be plugged in. In the
context of PCs, the term backplane
refers to the large circuit board that
contains sockets for expansion cards.
Backplanes are often described as being
either active or passive. Active
backplanes contain, in addition to the
sockets, logical circuitry that performs
computing functions. In contrast,
passive backplanes contain almost no
computing circuitry and simply act as a
conduit to pass signals from.
Compression Ideas;
Q: “How should I set my compressor for
recording rock guitar? Can you give me
some compressor tips to make heavy
guitars sound more full and even? For
example, I want single-note melodies to
sound as full as chords or power chords.
Also I want to give palm-muted power
chords more pump or bite. I'm using the
built-in dynamic processors on a Yamaha
03D Mixer.”
A: Part of your problem is that the
Yamaha 03D compressors are wonderfully
transparent, so getting a pumping sound
isn't that easy!
